Daily Reading List – December 6, 2023 (#218)

Today was a big day for Google. We took the wraps off Gemini, our newest AI model that marks a true evolution in multi-modal models. But I read a bunch of things about more than Gemini! Check it out.

[blog] Introducing Gemini: our largest and most capable AI model. It’s here, and looks good! Learn more from this blog post, and a standalone website from our DeepMind team.

[paper] Gemini: A Family of Highly Capable Multimodal Models. To be fair, I haven’t finished this paper yet, but I’ve started. Looks like a useful report about Gemini.

[article] To Scale GenAI, Companies Need to Focus on 3 Factors. There are probably plenty of things to companies need to do, but this advice (enable explorers, bet on platforms, prioritize aggressively) is reasonable to me.

[blog] Everything I install and set up on a new MacBook as a web developer. What’s your go-to list for what’s needed on a new computer? Mine looks like this.

[article] The best new features in Angular 17: A kinder, faster Angular. The frontend space seems re-energized lately, and React is far from the only game in town.

[docs] Migrate across Google Cloud regions: Design resilient single-region environments on Google Cloud. This is a good architecture guide, regardless of which cloud you use.

[blog] How to Become a T-Shaped Developer and Boost Your Career. Specialists are useful, but it’s also powerful to have generalist (or t-shaped) skills in tech.

[blog] re:Invent 2023 — Is AWS In Unfamiliar Territory As A Follower? AWS is in a weird place. They’re super competent and it’s foolish to discount them. But they’re also noticeably behind on a major trend (again) and struggling to get back on offense. Saucier take from Corey here.

[article] Even OpenAI is tired of enterprise AI hype. There’s no magic bullet here. AI won’t transform your business without other work getting done first. Bet on platforms, and bet on those who can help you get there.
