Daily Reading List – September 13, 2023 (#161)

Flew home today on a 7am flight, and once again Past Richard made travel choices that Future Richard was saddled with. He’s a real problem. But I stayed awake enough to read some terrific pieces today, which you’ll find below.

[article] Kotlin rises to the Tiobe top 20. Kotlin is getting more popular each month, but what jumped out at me in this article was how far ahead Python is on “searched language tutorials.”

[blog] The Future of Manual Testing in Modern Software Development. Should we automate EVERYTHING? Is there a role for manual activities, like some test scenarios? I think so.

[blog] Introduction to CORS for Go programmers. Very good deep-dive blog post for effectively working across “origins” in your web app. Even if you don’t want to geek out on the details, read the first couple paragraphs for a useful summary of the problem area.

[blog] What is Optical Character Recognition? OCR explained by Google. Intro to OCR as a general idea that’s been around for a while, and how we’re making it better.

[article] UK government hurt by delays in legacy tech upgrades, skills shortages. Tough findings, but I’d be surprised if these are THAT different from what many folks experience every day.

[blog] Boosting Subsea Cables with Multi-Core Fiber Technology. I still barely understand how the internet works. But I still enjoy reading posts like this.

[article] Salesforce introduces Einstein Copilot Studio to help customers customize their AI. Be ready to see this everywhere: assistance, customization, and more. Look for ways to avoid duplication of underlying models or model management.

[article] A new way of thinking about open source sustainability. Instead of tip-jar approaches for maintainers, Matt proposes buying products (and thus, supporting) the companies that employ many of the maintainers of key open source projects.

[blog] Who Is Product Operating Model For? I think this applies to anyone reading my daily reading lists, whether your employer sells chicken or network routers. If you’re powering your business with technology, the product operating model is for you.

[blog] Ten ways troubleshooting GKE apps is now easier in Cloud Logging, part 2. Super practical post for those trying to get problems with their Kubernetes-based apps figured out.
