Daily Reading List – May 12, 2025 (#550)

A sunny weekend here in San Diego, and I blew off work a few times in favor of reading a book or playing outside with the kids. But that did mean some frantic content creation today. I’ll take that trade every time.

[article] Stream All the Things — Patterns of Effective Data Stream Processing. Watch the video or read the transcript of this good talk about topics every architect should be aware of.

[article] Why developers and their bosses disagree over generative AI. Mismatched expectations, lack of shared context, and confusing vendor messaging doesn’t help!

[blog] Kubernetes 1.33 is available on GKE! This latest Kubernetes release had some excellent features, and you can already use it on Google Cloud’s Kubernetes Engine.

[article] When Picking a New CEO, Ask Them for a Growth Plan. This is a good way to make hiring judgements based on future-focused thinking, not past success. There could be fear of giving “free consulting” to companies, but for senior job roles, that’s a risk worth taking.

[blog] How we’re using AI to drive scientific research with greater real-world benefit. Very cool, and it’s exciting to see this type of private research going on.

[article] The Unsung Ingredient in Stripe, Square and Linear’s Success: Taste. I haven’t seen this angle and I like “taste” as something to develop.

[blog] Building Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server with Google Apps Script. Such creativity! Folks can build some pretty flexible things with Google Apps Script, even an MCP server.

[article] Enterprises eye AI assistants to modernize systems. Some big ambitions here! Business leaders are hoping AI helps them get a handle on legacy systems.

[article] How To Get Good at Strategy. Anyone can learn to think strategically, and there are plenty of articles and books that can help you. Here’s a solid article, that also links to some good books.

[article] Reading “Business” Books Is A Waste Of Time. A counter point to what I just said? Maybe. There are definitely some “sugar high” books that never get beyond superficial advice. If you can, absorb a lot of different things and form your own opinions.

    Really enjoyed the “taste” angle in product success. Been guilty on both sides of this equation as recently as a few months ago.
